METRO EAST CHAPTER OF CREDIT UNIONS
CHARITY COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES
September 27, 2012

The regular meeting of the CHARITY COMMITTEE of the MICHIGAN SCHOOLS AND GOVERNMENT CREDIT UNION was called to order by Chairperson Crystal Gracz at 9:09 a.m. on September 27, 2012, at Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union.

COMMITTEE MEMBERS PRESENT: Crystal Gracz, Gail Hernalsteen, Julie Swidwinski-Donnellon, Ronnie Johnson, Heather Nelson, and Becky Reini.

COMMITTEE MEMBERS EXCUSED: Kathi Sitek, Jessica Johnson, and Mandy Lathrop

GUEST PRESENT: Lisa Burroughs and Patricia Malone from Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union and Ken Lampar from Macomb Literacy Partners.

Ken Lampar presented his organization, Macomb Literacy Partners, to the committee. His organization consists of a staff of three individuals whose goal is to combat illiteracy in Macomb County. The Macomb County illiteracy rate is estimated at 13% (70,000-109,000 people). Of these, 62% are between the ages of 25-45 years old and 43% are the parents of children.

MLP was founded in 1984 and has provided more than 4,000 people with free, weekly one-on-one tutoring services. If designated as a charity of choice for next year, the Metro East Charity Committee could assist by performing the following:
• Recruit volunteers and host training. Fifteen new tutors would be substantial.
• Raise funds to supplement their current budget of only $200,000.
• Raise awareness of illiteracy

OLD BUSINESS:

Macomb County DHS –  Julie Swidwinski-Donnellon gave a summary of the School Supply Drive. Overall, the campaign was a success, raising nearly $1000 in cash donations and thousands of in-kind donations. Supplies were collected and sorted by credit union volunteers before being delivered to the Macomb County DHS. The use of a U-Haul was also obtained to assist with transporting the many supplies that were gathered. The U-Haul was donated by Lakeside Budget and Storage in Sterling Heights. DHS distributed more than 500 back packs to needy children in less than 1 ½ days.

Phone Home for the Holidays – Crystal Gracz is the lead and contact for this charity, which will be supported as our charity from September 1st to October 31st. Crystal will obtain an exact cutoff date for this campaign, email everyone the flyers/tent cards, and send out a blast to the league.

March of Dimes – Gail is meeting with Barb from March of Dimes for the proposed cost for walk checkpoints. Everyone agreed that the checkpoints were beneficial in the past years and should be continued.
